We are extremely lucky to be working with students from Malawi for our Cross Cultural Curriculum due to the many different experiences each one will bring to the table when they meet the American class.
Basic Information
POPULATION: ~19,000,000
The median age of the population is 16.4 years and is the 5th fastest growing population in the world.
5 main ethnic groups make up this 19,196,246. (Chewa 35.1%, Lomwe 18.9%, Yao 13.1%, Ngoni 12%, Tumbuka 9.4%, Sena 3.5%, Tonga 1.8%, Nyanja 1%, Nkhonde 0.9%, other 1.8%). As you can see, there is no true majority.


Education In Malawi
The country has made great strides at educating the younger generations. With the average amount of schooling being about 11 years, Malawi boasts one of the highest on the continent.
Literacy Rates
Over the past two decades, Malawi has seen its literacy rates for school aged children rise to ~72%, one of the higher numbers in Africa.

AIDS Epidemic
Malawi, like many African nations, has been hard hit by the AIDS epidemic with over 16000 new infections in 2016 according to data from the UN. Despite this Malawi has one of the best prevention and treatment programs in Africa.
Youth Demographics
40% of Malawians are under 15 and roughly 70% are under 25.
